Are the linnean and phylogenetic nomenclatural systems combinable? Recommendations for biological nomenclature.
A combination approach between the rules and recommendations from the Linnean (rank-based) and phylogenetic nomenclature is proposed, with a review of the debate. Advantages and drawbacks of both systems are discussed. Too often the debates are biased and unconstructive, and there is a need for dialogue and compromise. Our recommendations for the future of biological classification, to be consi...
متن کاملA new nomenclature for fungi
Important changes brought about by the Melbourne International Code of Nomenclature for Algae,FungiandPlantsare briefly reviewed concerning a clarification of the spelling and typification of sanctioned fungal names, the recognition of electronic publication for the validity of nomenclatural novelties, permission to use English diagnoses or descriptions for their valid publication, and the requ...
متن کاملOn the temporal inconsistencies of Linnean taxonomic ranks
The inconsistency problem in systematics refers in part to the fact that disparate taxa of identical Linnean rank are not necessarily similar or even readily comparable in any other specifiable biological feature. This shortcoming led to a ‘temporal banding’ proposal in which extant clades associated with particular taxonomic ranks would be standardized according to a universal metric: the abso...
متن کاملAllergen nomenclature.
This article presents a nomenclature system for allergens which has been officially recommended by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS). The nomenclature is based on proposals of the IUIS Sub-Committee for Allergen Nomenclature and is applicable to highly purified, well-characterized allergens and to non-purified or partially purified allergenic extracts.
